National Home Bathroom Remodel

The Champaign - Urbana area has numerous examples of National Homes, pre-fabricated houses manufactured in the 1940s and '50s in response to an urgent national need for affordable post -war housing.  They present special challenges for the remodeler, as their construction is not standard 2x4 framing.  New Prairie has worked in many of these homes.

In order to be more practical, the space needed a shower enclosure rather than this squeezed-in tub.  The new floor is a limestone composite flooring that is fortified with a polymeric resin.  It is warmer than ceramic tile and reportedly less prone to cracking.

A unique feature of this bathroom is the small shelf under the window to the side of the toilet, tucked in behind the shower.  If the shower door had extended all the way to the wall, it would have come to the middle of the window.  With this solution, there is space for extra towels, candles, magazines, or toilet paper.

Nostalgic forms are juxtaposed with modern colors in this Mahomet farmhouse bathroom. Subway tiles, a pedestal sink, and black and white 1 inch tiles are all a part of this ensemble that celebrates historical forms.
