Urbana Strawbale

Greatroom

Champaign-Urbana's first strawbale home has solid maple flooring salvaged from Sidell Elementary Grade School, which was being demolished. There were many recycled, reclaimed, and refurbished materials used throughout the house.

The kitchen features blackboard slate countertops, cherry cabinets, energy efficient appliances, and custom tile backsplash.

The tile backsplash helps define the kitchen area.

This bathroom features slate tile on the floors and bath surround.

Bathroom detail

The bathroom wall is a beautiful example of the organic shape of bale walls.  Lime plaster and clay paint enhance the softness.  The signature cherry (from sustainably harvested wood) windowsills throughout the house were handmade.

Guest Room

Red clay paint gives this guest room a rich, soft feel.

Basement Greatroom

Large, open basement space is perfect for the office of New Prairie Construction.  The floor is stained concrete.

Back Porch

Both the greatroom and the master bedroom open onto the screened-in back porch.

Back Porch wall detail

Stones embedded in the final coat of plaster decorate the wall above the door.  Natural materials offer the chance for creative expression. 

Back Patio Area

The back steps lead to the garage and studio building, also constructed of strawbale.
