Barn Roof Solar Panel Installation, East Central Illinois

A 19th-century barn meets 21st-century technology in this solar panel installation. Barn roofs are an ideal place for solar panels, as they are rarely shaded by trees or other buildings, and can get full value from the solar array.

Because these panels are not shaded at all, string inverters were a good option for this installation. There are two inverters, which convert DC to AC for use in the home. (Another option would have been micro-inverters for each individual panel. These are more efficient, but also pricier.)

This system is about twice as big as what a typical central Illinois home would need for its power.
